Numerical Linear Algebra, Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Edition by Lloyd N. Trefethen and David Bau is a classic textbook on the theory and practice of numerical linear algebra, originally published in 1997 and reissued by SIAM in 2022. It develops the subject through a sequence of “lectures,” beginning with matrix–vector multiplication and fundamental concepts such as orthogonality, norms, conditioning, and stability, before moving to major computational techniques. The book covers matrix factorizations, least-squares problems, Gaussian elimination and linear systems, as well as eigenvalue and eigenvector computations.
A major emphasis is the distinction between mathematical algorithms and their numerical behavior: an algorithm can be mathematically correct yet unreliable because of rounding errors or ill-conditioning. The later sections introduce iterative methods, which the authors present as particularly important for large-scale computation, including techniques for solving systems and computing eigenvalues.
MATLAB examples and computational intuition are integrated throughout, making the book both theoretical and practical. The anniversary edition retains the original structure while providing updated presentation and supplementary material, including an appendix discussing what numerical analysis actually means.
