Solid Geometry (2002)
#1
Solid Geometry is a 2002 British mystery-drama short film, written and directed by Denis Lawson and starring Ewan McGregor as Phil. It is based on a short story by Ian McEwan from the collection First Love, Last Rites. Phil is a successful advertising executive whose life changes when he inherits his great-great-grandfather’s secret diaries. The diaries contain strange theories about geometry, particularly the idea of a “plane without a surface.” Fascinated by these ideas, Phil becomes increasingly obsessed with discovering whether the geometric theories have a connection to a hidden or supernatural dimension. His intellectual obsession gradually damages his relationship with his wife, Maisie, as the boundaries between mathematics, mystery, and reality begin to disappear.

The film becomes increasingly surreal and supernatural when Phil follows the diaries' instructions and folds a sheet of paper into a lotus-like geometric structure. The object suddenly emits light and disappears, convincing Phil that his ancestor discovered a genuine method of transformation. His obsession intensifies, and he eventually experiments with the phenomenon involving Maisie. She mysteriously disappears, leaving Phil alone and confronted with the consequences of his pursuit.

The story uses geometry as a metaphor for obsession, forbidden knowledge, sexuality, and the limits of human understanding, deliberately blurring the distinction between a mathematical concept and a supernatural gateway. [/url]
