Agora (2009)
#1
Agora is a 2009 historical drama directed by Alejandro Amenábar, starring Rachel Weisz as Hypatia of Alexandria, a mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer living in Roman Egypt during the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The film portrays Alexandria during a period of intense religious conflict and social unrest, particularly between pagans and Christians.

Hypatia is presented as a devoted seeker of knowledge and scientific understanding, investigating the movements of the planets while teaching philosophy and astronomy. As political and religious tensions increase, her commitment to intellectual inquiry brings her into conflict with increasingly powerful religious authorities.

The film explores themes of science, religion, knowledge, political power, intolerance, and the destruction of ancient learning. Its story is deliberately historical fiction, and several important elements of Hypatia's scientific achievements in the film are not supported by surviving historical evidence. In particular, historians have criticized the portrayal of Hypatia as discovering heliocentricity and elliptical planetary orbits, since there is no evidence that the historical Hypatia made such discoveries. Nevertheless, Agora uses her story to dramatize the broader tension between reason and religious authority and the fate of classical intellectual culture during a period of major social transformation.
