Cube (1997)

Cube (1997) is a Canadian science-fiction horror film directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali. The story follows several strangers who mysteriously awaken inside a gigantic maze of interconnected cube-shaped rooms, with no memory of how they arrived or why they were chosen. Some rooms contain deadly traps, forcing the group to cooperate and use their individual abilities to survive. Among them are Leaven, a mathematics student who discovers patterns in the numbers marking the rooms; Quentin, a police officer who assumes leadership; Holloway, a doctor; Worth, an architect who knows more about the structure than he initially admits; and Kazan, a man with extraordinary mathematical calculation abilities.

As the survivors investigate, they discover that the numbers on the rooms represent coordinates, while mathematical properties such as prime-number factorization help determine which rooms contain traps. Worth reveals that he helped design the Cube's outer structure but does not know who created it or what its ultimate purpose is.

The film gradually becomes less about simply escaping a physical maze and more about human behavior under extreme pressure: fear, mistrust, authority, cooperation, violence, and the danger of bureaucracy without a clear purpose. The deliberately Kafkaesque and existential atmosphere leaves the origins and ultimate purpose of the Cube largely unexplained. In the ending, Kazan reaches the mysterious light outside, while the others die, leaving the audience with an intentionally ambiguous conclusion.
