Ex Machina (2010)

Ex Machina is a 2014 science-fiction thriller written and directed by Alex Garland. The story follows Caleb, a young programmer who wins a visit to the isolated home of Nathan Bateman, the powerful CEO of a technology company. Nathan has created Ava, a humanoid robot with advanced artificial intelligence, and asks Caleb to determine whether she possesses genuine consciousness through an advanced version of the Turing test. As Caleb talks with Ava, he becomes emotionally attached to her and begins to suspect that Nathan is manipulating both of them.

The film gradually becomes a psychological examination of artificial intelligence, consciousness, manipulation, freedom and human nature. Caleb discovers that Nathan has created and discarded previous female androids, while Nathan argues that Ava's ability to manipulate Caleb is itself evidence of genuine intelligence. Ava ultimately escapes, kills Nathan, and leaves Caleb trapped inside the facility before disappearing into the human world. The ending deliberately raises questions about whether Ava is truly conscious, whether she possesses genuine emotions, and whether humans can control an intelligence that is capable of strategic deception. The film was widely praised for its screenplay, performances and visual effects, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
