Mathematical Atlas
#1
The Mathematical Atlas was a web-based “gateway to mathematics” designed to help readers navigate the major areas of mathematics, particularly mathematics at the university level and above, without attempting to function as a detailed research encyclopedia. Its goal was to introduce broad mathematical subjects, explain important ideas and milestone results, and show how different areas connect to one another. Rather than simply presenting isolated definitions, the Atlas was intended to give readers a map of mathematics—helping them understand the relationships between fields and identify where a particular topic belongs.

A major feature was its emphasis on orientation and further learning: individual topics were accompanied by descriptions and pointers toward books, articles, websites, and other resources. In this respect, the Atlas served a different purpose from highly detailed reference sites such as MathWorld: it was more concerned with answering “What is this area of mathematics, and where should I go next?” than with providing exhaustive technical formulas or proofs. Contemporary descriptions specifically highlighted its broad coverage, accessible introductions, and connections between neighboring mathematical subjects.
