Learning LaTeX [Griffiths]
#1
Learning LaTeX, 2nd Edition, by David F. Griffiths and Desmond J. Higham, is a concise practical introduction to LaTeX, the document-preparation system widely used in mathematics, computer science, engineering, and the sciences. It begins with the fundamentals—creating a document, organizing sections, formatting text, and producing mathematical expressions—and gradually introduces more advanced features such as document classes, packages, figures, bibliographies, indexes, and multi-line mathematical displays. The emphasis is strongly practical: examples show the LaTeX source alongside the resulting document, allowing beginners to learn by modifying working examples.

The second edition expands the original book with material particularly useful to academics and students: AMS mathematical packages, BibTeX for bibliographies, Beamer for presentations, and the a0poster class for research posters. The appendices provide complete templates for an article, report, presentation, and poster, while a final appendix points readers toward online LaTeX documentation, software, help resources, and forums.

Overall, the book is designed to take someone from having little or no LaTeX experience to being able to produce professional mathematical papers, reports, theses, presentations, and conference posters without having to work through a large reference manual.
