Adventures of a Mathematician is a 2020 biographical film directed and written by Thorsten Klein, focusing on the life of Polish mathematician Stanisław Ulam. The story follows Ulam as he moves through the scientific world of the 1940s, eventually becoming involved with the Manhattan Project and the development of nuclear weapons. The film portrays both his mathematical work and the personal relationships and historical circumstances surrounding his career.
The film is a German-Polish-British co-production, with Philippe Tłokiński playing Ulam. It was filmed in Germany and Poland and premiered at the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival. Rather than presenting mathematics in isolation, the film connects Ulam's intellectual life with the broader scientific, political, and moral questions of the nuclear age. The Hollywood Reporter described it as an “uneven but compelling” look at the beginning of the nuclear era.
