Math Modeling: Getting Started and Getting Solutions [Bliss]
#1
Math Modeling: Getting Started and Getting Solutions is a 2014 SIAM handbook designed to introduce high-school and undergraduate students—and teachers—to mathematical modeling. Its central idea is that mathematics can be used to represent real-world situations in order to understand them quantitatively or qualitatively, make predictions, and support decisions. The book illustrates this through problems involving topics such as fuel costs, high-speed rail, disease spread, and roller-coaster “thrill,” emphasizing that modeling is not simply applying a formula but translating an open-ended real problem into mathematical terms.

The handbook presents modeling as a creative, iterative process: identify and simplify the real-world problem, make appropriate assumptions, formulate a mathematical model, analyze or solve it, test the results against reality, and refine the model when necessary. It grew out of the SIAM/MathWorks M3 Challenge, where organizers found that students often struggled with open-ended problems because mathematical modeling was rarely taught explicitly in school. The authors therefore aim to give students practical tools and confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems, while showing that the same real-world question can often be approached through multiple meaningful mathematical models.
