The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) - mklabgr - 09-29-2026

The Man Who Knew Infinity is a 2015 British biographical drama about the extraordinary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, based on Robert Kanigel’s 1991 biography. The film follows Ramanujan’s journey from poverty in Madras, India, where he developed remarkable mathematical ideas largely on his own, to Cambridge University during World War I. After sending his mathematical work to G. H. Hardy, Hardy recognizes his exceptional talent and invites him to Cambridge. There, Ramanujan struggles with cultural differences, racial prejudice, academic conventions, and the need to express his intuitive mathematics through formal proofs.

The story focuses particularly on the intellectual relationship between Ramanujan and Hardy, whose collaboration becomes central to Ramanujan’s development as a mathematician. Despite serious health problems, isolation from his family, and institutional obstacles, Ramanujan continues producing important mathematical work and eventually receives major recognition, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. He returns to India, but his declining health leads to his death at only 32 years old.

The film presents his life as a story of mathematical genius, perseverance, collaboration, cultural barriers, and recognition, while emphasizing the extraordinary originality of Ramanujan’s mathematical intuition.
