Imperative (1982) - mklabgr - 09-29-2026 Imperative (Imperativ) is a 1982 German drama film written and directed by Krzysztof Zanussi, with music by Wojciech Kilar and cinematography by Sławomir Idziak. The film was entered into competition at the 39th Venice International Film Festival, where it received the Grand Jury Prize. Its protagonist, Augustin, is a mathematics professor with few students who is consumed by questions about the meaning of life, fate, time, and nature. The story explores Augustin's increasingly intense existential crisis and his struggle between reason, faith, and meaning. He vandalizes a sacred icon in a church and openly admits his actions, while his deteriorating psychological state eventually leads to a nervous breakdown and self-inflicted injury. His wife Yvonne, who had been separating from him, returns after his breakdown and temporarily accepts his existential struggle. The film therefore uses the life of a mathematician and intellectual to examine profound questions about existence, morality, religion, and human purpose. FILM |
