Ghost in the Shell (2017) - mklabgr - 09-28-2026 Ghost in the Shell (2017) is a cyberpunk science-fiction action thriller directed by Rupert Sanders, based on Masamune Shirow’s Japanese manga. The story takes place in a near future where humans increasingly merge with technology. Major Mira Killian, a human brain placed inside a highly advanced cybernetic body, works for Section 9, an elite counter-terrorism unit. While investigating a mysterious hacker named Kuze, she begins experiencing fragments of memories that make her question her identity and the circumstances under which she became a cyborg. She eventually discovers that her memories were implanted and that she was originally Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese woman who had opposed technological augmentation before being captured and used in Hanka Robotics' experiments. The film explores themes of identity, memory, humanity, corporate power, and the increasingly blurred boundary between humans and machines. Visually, it was praised for its cinematography, futuristic cityscape, action sequences, and production design, while critics were more divided about its plot, character development, and philosophical depth compared with the original anime. The casting of Scarlett Johansson as Major also generated significant controversy over accusations of whitewashing, because the character's original identity is Japanese. FILM |
