Zotero is a free, open-source research-management tool designed to help users collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share academic sources. It can automatically recognize research materials while browsing the web, including journal articles, books, library records, news articles, and preprints. Users can organize sources into collections, apply tags, create saved searches, and keep notes and associated files together. Zotero is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

One of Zotero's main strengths is citation and bibliography management. It integrates directly with Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs and supports more than 9,000 citation styles, making it useful for academic papers, theses, and research projects. Optional synchronization keeps libraries, notes, and files available across devices, while group libraries allow collaborative bibliographies and research projects. Zotero is developed as open-source software by a nonprofit organization, with an emphasis on user control of research data.
